Montes uses first-class bovine leather and chromium-free vegetable tanning in an ethically responsible manner. The leathers are carefully cleaned, dehaired, and preserved with salt; then they are tanned with tannins from acorns, red ironwood, mimosa, and chestnut bark to achieve durability, flexibility, and rich color. The leathers are left as natural as possible, semi-finished in the tannery, and hand-dyed with natural dyes. This process provides a shiny, long-lasting surface.
