Montes uses first-class cowhide and chrome-free vegetable tanning in line with ethical values. The hides are carefully cleaned, dehaired, and preserved with salt; then they are dyed with tannins from oak acorns, quebracho, mimosa, and chestnut bark to gain durability, flexibility, and rich color. The leathers are left as natural as possible, brought to a semi-finished state at the tannery, and hand-dyed with natural dyes. This provides a shiny, long-lasting surface.
